Barbara Luke, ScD, MPH, RN, RD is a professor of nursing, obstetrics and pediatrics at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. Luke also has joint appointments in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Miami. In 1972, Luke graduated from Columbia University in New York City, with a Bachelor of Science in nursing and completed a Master of Arts in foods, nutrition and dietetics at New York University. In 1978, Luke completed her Master of Public Health in population studies at Columbia University, and then finished her Doctor of Science in maternal and child health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, in 1991. Luke has authored, co-authored, or edited 16 books and more than 50 original research papers as well as more than 100 scientific abstracts in the areas of maternal nutrition, multiple births and employment during pregnancy. Her work during the past 15 years has focused on developing prenatal care standards for multiple pregnancies. Luke’s studies have been cited in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Technical Bulletin on Multiple Pregnancy, the New York Times, the Washington Post and Williams’ Obstetrics. Luke is active at the national level in nutrition and epidemiologic societies, and holds elected offices with both the American Dietetic Association and the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology. She is on national and international editorial and advisory boards, and has served as a member of the National Children’s Study.
